My experience

By Kenneth

I struggled with alcohol very harshly up until 3 years ago. My experience with addiction cost me nearly everything but my life and freedom. I at one point had lost my wife to alcohol, had two separate stays at the VA hospital for rehab, lost many close relationships, could not hold a job, etc. I was sick everyday I woke up. I had, towards the end, succumbed to the fact that I would never control this and I was absolutely ok with my addiction being the end of me. Finally.

One night I went to bed after downing nearly a fifth of vodka. I don’t know exactly the circumstances of how I ended up where I “was”. But I was no longer in my body. I was just me…or my soul. I was with something or some being that I could not perceive visually. I could only “feel” this presence. In this state, I observed myself drinking almost as if I was a fly on the wall. Suddenly, the most profound moment of life occurred. This thing or being I could only “feel” pushed into me words without speaking. Almost as if touch could translate into english. It said “If you dwell in it, you will drown in it.”

With that the experience ended. This all seemed to occur within seconds. But when I woke up in bed I felt…free. I smiled immediately as I knew it was over. I no longer felt whatever it was that was weighing on me. To this day I have never once craved a drink. In fact, the thought of doing so turns my stomach. It is as if I never drank. I don’t associate myself with who I was. I will forever remain truly perplexed and always truly grateful. To think that something that had such a hold over my life just instantly became nothing put me in tune with my spiritualty and gave me a deeper meaning of life.

As of today I am still 100% sober. My wife and I are happier then ever. We just purchased our first house last year. I hope my story will make sense to whomever reads this. Thank you so much for giving me that platform to share.
