Dear mr Taylor,
I was born in 1962 and (only) recently came in touch with spirituality. Reading your book Spiritual Science I finally understand what I experienced in my childhood. I estimate somewhere between 5 and 12 years of age I’ve had several (impossible to say how much) experiences where all of a sudden my perception of everything and -one surrounding me became very lively. The ones I recall best took place in the sitting room of our home. As a child I’d regularly lay down on the carpet just like that (a very vivid memory from my 4 elder sisters). Sometimes, when I got up, I felt very compassionate or gentle towards the world surrounding me and remember touching things I saw like the coffee table, the arm chair and these objects seemed to have soft edges, in some way they looked and felt ‘lively’. It felt as if they appreciated the touch and so did I, there was some kind of connection between everything. These experiences didn’t last very long and I remember they started and ended with a special taste at the back of my mouth which I can’t really describe but I would recognise immediately if it were to reappear. I never shared these experiences as I didn’t have the words for it nor would I have known how to begin, the story wouldn’t go anywhere. Despite that they are part of my most lively memories of childhood. The taste sporadically reappeared during my adolescence but it was transient as always but without the intense compassionate/connected experience.
Kind regards
Jan
